Retired since 2005, "Butzi" Porsche's legacy lives on, especially in the extraordinary Porsche Design chronographs, briefcases and other haute couture items that are de rigeur accoutrements of the fashionable European businessman.

Now, Porsche Design returns to its roots, collaborating on a special model for Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, the car company established by Butzi's grandfather.

The Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 has all the hallmarks of a Butzi Porsche creation. The black exterior houses an exquisitely detailed cockpit trimmed in black leather and Alcantara, with instrument dials patterned after Porsche Design chronographs. Alcantara covers the three-spoke steering wheel, gearshift lever, handbrake grip and headliner, with the dashboard, center console and door panels also trimmed in black.

The car company has contributed its own detail work, lowering the body by 0.4 inch, adding 5mm spacers and 19-inch turbo wheels, with 235/35ZR19 tires in front and 265/35ZR19s in the rear.

Further strengthening the ties between the two firms is the Porsche Design Edition 1 collection, which comes in black or black matte and is included as standard equipment with the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1. Included in the collection are a briefcase, a Flat Six Chronograph, a pocket knife, sunglasses, pen and key ring.

A limited run of only 777 cars will be available, identified by a numbered badge on the glovebox. The car goes on sale in November in Germany, where it will be priced from $79,600 (or $95,000, with the 19 percent value-added tax included). American deliveries are slated to begin in January.

What this means to you: This little number looks to be red hot among collectors, especially with its special connection to Porsche Design.
